Veterans Disability

bar_flag (9K)

What I would like to accomplish with the subject of "Veteran's Disability" is to list information concerning disability benefits readily available to our Veterans.

There will be other "typical" Veteran benefits listed also. I've talked to many vets concerning available benefits and have received the same response "I didn't know that was available". I'll try and list these types of benefits plus the requirements. Information on where to obtain the benefits will be included. Individual State benefits for Veterans will be included in the future.
Please note that most of these links will open government pages. They load slooowly.

Disability Benefits For Wounded Warriors
"Military service members can receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security. Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application. The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs." http://www.ssa.gov/woundedwarriors/

Transition Assistance Program and Disabled Transition Assistance Program
"VA encourages all separating service members to contact their respective Family Service Centers/Transition Center to determine when the Transition Assistance Briefings are scheduled for a particular site and attend. These briefings provide information which will help you make the transition to civilian life easier by ensuring you are aware of the many VA benefits available to you."

"Disabled transition (DTAP) is an integral part of the transition program and concentrates on those service members being separated due to a disability incurred while on active duty."

Receiving help for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
"Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can occur after you have been through a traumatic event. A traumatic event is something horrible and scary that you see or that happens to you. During this type of event, you think that your life or others' lives are in danger. You may feel afraid or feel that you have no control over what is happening.

All people with PTSD have lived through a traumatic event that caused them to fear for their lives, see horrible things, and feel helpless. Strong emotions caused by the event create changes in the brain that may result in PTSD".
